Forget retirement homes! Age in place instead

A problem that many people face as they advance in years is that their homes are no longer suitable for senior lifestyle needs. Basic features like stairways can suddenly become major obstacles in everyday life, which is why so many of the elderly move into retirement communities. However, if you still have a few years left before your golden years, you may want to consider making a few upgrades to your home so you can age in place comfortably. Keep these interior design tips in mind so you can enjoy your humble abode for many years to come.

Downstairs bedroom
If you have a multi-floor home, chances are your bedroom is located on one of the upper floors. While climbing the stairs every night may not be a problem yet, it can put a lot of stress on your body later in life. In order to reduce the number of trips you have to make upstairs, consider relocating your bedroom to the first floor of your home at some point. You can convert a spare bedroom, TV room or home office and then shift that room upstairs if need be.

Greater mobility
Beyond stairways, tight corners and narrow passages can make moving about your house a challenge as a senior. Because of this, you may want to open up the entryway frames between rooms a bit so you can pass through them easily. Similarly, rearranging your furniture so that any large leather sofas or wide wooden dining room tables allow you to pass through easily will make getting around far kinder on your body. For smaller rooms like the bathroom, you'll also want to make sure you can turn around conveniently without bumping into anything.

Easy access
There are a number of minor design details around your home that are simply unsuitable to senior lifestyles. For instance, you'll want to make sure your electrical outlets are higher than normal so you can reach them without straining yourself. Similarly, you may want to adjust your kitchen counters, cabinets and appliances to be a bit lower.
