Three tips for attractive interior lighting
When you're considering redecorating or updating your home's interior, there are many different areas that need your attention. Almost every aspect of your house's design influences another, so you need to exercise caution when introducing sweeping changes.
Perhaps the most dramatic change you can make in your home involves its lighting. Between desk and table lamps, pendant lights and chandeliers, you have many options for illumination – provided you know how to implement them properly. Here are three tips for attractive interior lighting.
Color conscious
The effectiveness and appeal of your lighting choices depends largely on your home's existing color schemes. Lighter and neutral shades such as white, cream, yellow, light blue, light green and gray reflect illumination well and can actually enhance the brightness of a space. Alternately, darker colors like brown, blue, maroon and black will absorb light and make a room feel dimmer. Depending on the size of the space and color scheme, you may want to either add or subtract lighting fixtures to achieve your desired effect.
Task specific
The type of lighting fixtures you include in a room should also reflect the purpose of the space. For instance, a room that's meant for entertaining is best served by overhead lighting fixtures that can provide bright, widespread illumination. However, an accent table lamp is best for individual tasks such as reading, studying or watching television – as it provides bright illumination in a specific area without dominating the room.
Added control
When dealing with overhead pendant lights and chandeliers that illuminate an entire room, sometimes you want to adjust the fixtures to a level that's between off and full blast. Installing dimmer switches on these lights will provide added control when you want to set the mood, and are also great for reducing energy consumption.
